ocr: Cameroon is ethnically diverse t there are 230 groups although - n0 single group is dominant. The largest is the Bamileke of the center southwest, but this group has never heldpolitical power. When President Ahidjo, al northern Fulani, retired,he was replaced by Paul Biya ofthe southeastern Bulu-Beti group. The north-south hostility which affects many other West African states 1S also present in Cameroon, albeit diminished by the great diversity ofpeoples. There is tension between competing groups ofthe south. There are sizeable groups ofFrench-spealdng and English-spealing peoples.
